Fuel cells are an electrochemical energy conversion and power generation systems. Fuel cells allow to convert directly into electricity by reduction and oxidation reactions that occur at the anode and cathode of the electrochemical cell. SOFC is known to the highest efficiency compared with the other fuel cells operated. In this research, A 16-stacked anode supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) was designed and fabricated to achieve a complete gas seal and the facile stacking of components. The stack was assembled with unit cell of 10 x 10 cm2 area, and each cell was interconnected by ferritic Fe-Cr alloy separator using a proprietary sealant sheet. No leakage of gas was found from the sealings between cells and interconnects during the prolonged time of 1,062 h operation. The test at 820 resulted in the OCV of 16.7 V, peak power of 1 kW, and power density of 0.77 W/cm2, respectively, while the long term degradation rate of the power at 750 was 3.12 % during operation time over 836 h.      

Energy storage systems (ESS) provide the solution for demand and consume of electricity. ESS might be divided them into six main categories Solid State Batteries(BESS), Flow Batteries, Flywheels,Compressed, Thermalcapturing, includingPumped Hydro-Power has been used so far.

Sodium sulphur (NAS) battery is a high energy storage system (ESS). These days, as the use of renewable green energy like wind energy, solar energy and ocean energy is rapidly increasing, the demand of ESS is increasing and NAS battery is considered to be one of the most promising ESS. Since NAS battery has a high energy density (3 times of lead acid battery), long cycle life and no self-charge and discharge, it is a good candidate for ESS. A NAS battery consists of sulphur as the positive electrode, sodium as the negative electrode and ββ"-alumina as the electrolyte and a separator simultaneously. Since sulphur is an insulator, carbon felt should be used as conductor with sulphur and so the composition and property of the cathode could largely influence the cell performance and life cycle. In this research, the components of NAS battery, single cell, stack, and 10kW system were fabricated and evaluated in the view of the electrical property of short and long term among 5 years.

 


主讲人简介:

Dr. Cho Namung is a visiting professor of School of Material Science and Chemical Engineering in Hanyang University in Korea. He has a position as a research fellow of Chemistry for Materials Graduate School of Engineering Mie University in Japan as well. He had been working for SOEC as a research director at St. Andrew University in England in 2017. He was invited to Connecticut Global Fuel Cell Center (CGFCC), University of Connecticut, USA, from 2004 to 2005. He was a Project Leader and Senior Principle Researcher of Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (RIST) in Korea from 1994 to 2017. NaS battery project prepared by himself from 2009 was started with more than $ 30 million supported by POSCO from 2010 to 2015 as well as $ 15 million by Korea government in 2011 up to 2015. He fulfilled the MCFC and SOFC research as a project leader in POSCO new business and invested with around $ 7 million for 4 years. 1 kW SOFC stack was developed in this project. Stack performance was quite high level in the view of long time operation on commercial products. He received his BS in Engineering of Inorganic Material, Hanyang University in Seoul Korea, in 1985. He received MS and PhD. in Inorganic and Physical Chemistry up to 1990 and 1993 in Osaka University in Japan. After Ph.D., he was invited to Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) as an inviting researcher of Korea government in 1994.
